What is the DAMA

The DAMA (Designated Area Migration Agreement) is a special labor agreement between the Australian government and regional authorities. It allows employers in specific regions to address local labor shortages by sponsoring overseas workers for positions that are not typically covered under the standard skilled migration program. DAMA is designed to support regional areas that have unique economic needs and skills shortages.

Key Features of DAMA

1. Regional Focus: DAMA is tailored to specific regions experiencing labor shortages that cannot be filled by the local workforce. These agreements are negotiated between the Department of Home Affairs and local councils or state governments.
2. Concessions: DAMA often includes concessions compared to standard skilled visa programs, such as:
   • Lower English language proficiency requirements.
   • Age limit relaxations for certain visas.
   • Pathways to permanent residency, even for roles that don't typically qualify.
3. Occupation Flexibility: It allows a broader range of occupations to be sponsored, often including lower-skilled roles not on the national skilled occupation lists.
4. Temporary and Permanent Visas: Workers can initially be sponsored on temporary visas, with some pathways leading to permanent residency over time.

How DAMA Works

• Step 1: An employer in a DAMA region enters into an agreement with the government.
• Step 2: The employer can then sponsor overseas workers under this agreement.
• Step 3: Workers receive specific concessions tailored to that region, making it easier to meet visa requirements.
